This year - 2013
Our Annual Spring Social
& Election Luncheon
will be held on
Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 11:30 AM to 2 PM
AND again this year (2013) we are meeting, greeting and eating in the
CAFETERIA of the GEORGE WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL.
The GWMS SCHOOL’S ADDRESS & LOCATION IS
STILL THE SAME AS OUR DEAR OLD GWHS!
1005 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA. 22301 |

The Annual Spring Social is
one of two major events
hosted each year by the George Washington High School Alumni Association
(GWAA). It is, in essence, a yearly membership meeting and luncheon. We do
combine the Election of New Board Members into this activity. Bit don’t worry,
most of that work will have been completed ahead of time and mainly only the
final results are announced.
This all-around fun event is open to all GWHS alumni, staff and their families
or friends.
The GW Alumni Association picks up the FULL cost for meal, drinks, taxes
and associated rental charges)
of the spring luncheon for all those attendees
who are current GWAA Members (regular, joint, associate, or honorary) and a
few invited dignitaries. All attendees will be GIVEN a ticket at the door that entitles you to the FREE
serve-yourself buffet lunch.
So you see, it is a very
opportune time to
join the Association since the VERY nominal cost of a 1-year membership ($10). However, any Non-Member of
GWAA, who attends, will
need to pay a $12
charge at the door.
THUS, if you're NOT currently a GWAA member, BUT
you ARE QUALIFIED to join,
then click here to renew your membership or join the Association.*
We strongly urge you to
DO THIS RIGHT NOW!
in order to save money and avoid any confusion at the door. |

ANNUAL SPRING SOCIAL LUNCHEON and ELECTION MEETING
SATURDAY -
MAY 4, 2013
The GWAA is
once again this year providing a free lunch to all VALID MEMBERS
Regular,
Joint, Associate and Honorary attending the Annual Spring Social.
(but, due to increased costs, donations at the door will be greatly appreciated)
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE:
This year
(2013) we are again meeting and eating in the
CAFETERIA of the GEORGE WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL.
The GWMS SCHOOL’S ADDRESS & LOCATION IS STILL THE SAME AS OUR OLD GWHS!
1005 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA. 22301
BUT, ALL CAMPUS PARKING IS NOW AT THE REAR OF THE SCHOOL
BUILDING.
DIRECTIONS: FROM MT. VERNON AVE. Turn into school property at the
mid-block traffic light at the SOUTH end of the school buildings. This road
continues on past the TULLOCH MEMORIAL GYMNASIUM (it’ll be on your left).
Proceed a short distance past the GYM towards the TRAIN/SUBWAY TRACKS. Then
turn LEFT toward the PARKING AREAS in BACK OF THE SCHOOL, as directed by the
PERMANENTLY INSTALLED SIGNS.
There will be a buffet style luncheon served of sandwiches, cold cuts,
condiments, various rolls, breads, water, sodas, and cookies. It will
be held in the CAFETERIA of our former high school. Temporary signs will be
posted to direct you to the check-in entrance.
The GWAA Board has decided to hold this event in our old school in order to
give everyone a chance to visit and reminisce about the joyful memories of our
high school days as well as to see the new building additions which features a
new library, classrooms and outside set-up. As we grow older, memories are
all we have and I’m sure this place will bring lots of memories back to us.
Another reason for having the Spring Luncheon at the school is to provide a
suitable and fitting venue for presenting the completed results of our GWAA
Legacy Project to our members.
The project is now finished and there will be a viewing of a selection of the
CD COMPASS yearbooks at this meeting. The
“Legacy Project” which was designed to convert nearly 40 years of our
yearbooks (1936-1974) into a non-deteriorating storable digital format and
compact discs (CDs). The GWAA plan Is to donate a MASTER
DIGITAL COPY of the complete set of COMPASS yearbooks to the George
Washington Middle School for reference use in their in-school media library;
another to the Alexandria City Library system and finally another to the
Alexandria City Public School system.
It took a while for your Board to decide exactly what the Legacy Project would
entail and to determine its cost parameters, which were significant. When we
finally came to those decisions, we also had to locate the best individuals)
to accomplish the task. We started by taking the yearbook that contained the
most pages to find out if it would fit in one CD at a reasonably high
resolution. After this it was determined that the largest COMPASS would fit,
then we proceeded to put the other yearbooks into digital format (CD).
Your GWAA also kept a MASTER DIGITAL file of the complete set of yearbooks and
from that we (GWAA) will produce AND make available individual CDs of each
yearbook at a very nominal cost to GWAA members. How to obtain a CD yearbook
and the cost will be announced at the Spring Social. |
